THE GALIANO TRAILS SOCIETY is a registered charity dedicated to the development and enjoyment of hiking trails on Galiano Island in British Columbia, Canada.
With more than 100 kilometres created and managed by the Society, we are working towards building a continuous network of trails from one end of Galiano Island to the other. In doing so, we seek to complement the beauty of the Parks Commission by building and managing trails across private property and collaborating closely with Galiano Island Parks and Recreation Commission (of the Capital Regional District), the Galiano Club and the Galiano Conservancy.
The Trails Society has adopted a flexible approach pioneered by the Kootenay Columbia Trail Society (www.kcts.ca) offering limited, renewable terms without affecting property title, and by providing liability insurance coverage. This makes easy for private owners to welcome trails across their land. A draft agreement is available for those interested in this process. A commercial company provides insurance for this as well.
Our Canada Revenue Agency Registered Charitable number is BN 85274 7203 RR0001 and we issue tax receipts for charitable donations.
We welcome everyone interested in developing, improving, using, and promoting trails on Galiano Island. The purposes of the Society are defined in its constitution as to:
PLAN, build and facilitate access to walking, equestrian and cycling trails on Galiano island.
COLLABORATE with and assist as volunteers and other groups interested in trail building, maintenance and use.
EXPAND the existing trail network on Galiano as guided by the Parks and Recreation Commission Trail Network Plan.
FORGE links with wider-area trail networks, e.g. the Trans-Canada Trail; CRD regional parks.
Walking in the forest is healthy for the body and the mind. The forest heals us with oxygen, peace, and cascading phytoncides which are the essential oils of trees that have any medicinal properties. We invite you to come and enjoy the forest and trails of Galiano Island.
Vision: The Galiano Trails Society envisions a rich array of well-made, well-signed and well-maintained trails that cover the breadth of the island and connect islanders and visitors to the natural wonders of forest and shoreline.
Goal: To have the island connected by a continuous network of well maintained, marked, and publicized trails from Sturdies Bay to Coon Bay by 2030.
